What is PBS Raising Readers?

Raising Readers uses public television to help meet the national education goal that all children will begin school "Raising Readers." Children's programs can be used as tools for learning in homes, preschools, and child care settings. The Raising Readers Service provides workshops designed to encourage active viewing experiences with reading and related activities. Raising Readers teaches families and caregivers how to use children's programing as a valuable educational resource emphasizing selective viewing and encouraging parents to watch TV with their children. Workshops, special events, curriculum guides, and newsletters are all designed to take the learning from the TV set into homes, family child care settings, schools, after-school programs, and child care centers.

Ready to Learn unites the power of television with the magic of books to introduce families to the joy of reading. KTWU distributes high-quality children's books each month to families who might not otherwise have access to them, enabling them to build a home library of selected children's literature.
