The Kansas Territorial Sesquicentennial Commission
has been established to gather information and develop a plan
for commemorative events and activities to mark the 150th anniversary of
Kansas becoming a state.
The state sesquicentennial will be observed in 2011. The year 2004 marked the
150th anniversary of Kansas being designated as a Territory of the United
States. The Kansas motto, "Ad Astra Per Aspera" (to the stars through
difficulties), is a reference to the seven-year struggle to make the
Territory of Kansas a state.
